COMMAND OVERLAY 0.3.11
By 3DBeast

Show Rhino command names and matching icons directly in the viewport for tutorials, recordings, teaching, and live demonstrations.

GET STARTED
1. Install command-overlay through Rhino PackageManager.
2. Restart Rhino after installation or an update.
3. Run CommandOverlay to open settings.
4. Run any modeling command to see its name and icon in the viewport.

TOOLBAR
On first load, the plugin attempts to add its blue button to a selected, visible top toolbar. It does not create a separate row. Left-click opens settings; right-click toggles the overlay. Rhino saves toolbar placement. The CommandOverlay command remains available if no suitable toolbar is visible or toolbar integration is unavailable.

SETTINGS
- Enable or disable the overlay and command icons independently.
- Choose from six positions along the top or bottom of the viewport.
- Adjust horizontal and vertical offsets with sliders or number inputs.
- Choose Rhino 8 or Rhino 9 icons, light/dark icons, and a light/dark background.
- Set display duration from 0 to 30 seconds after a command. A value of 0 shows the overlay only while a command is running.
- Preview changes in the viewport. Preferences are saved automatically.

COMMANDS
CommandOverlay Open settings.
CommandOverlayOn Enable the overlay.
CommandOverlayOff Disable the overlay.
CommandOverlayToggle Switch the overlay on or off.

COMPATIBILITY
Rhino 8.19 or newer, using the modern .NET runtime.
Tested on Windows with Rhino 8.35 and Rhino 9 WIP 9.0.26286.6303.
The package uses RhinoCommon and Eto and is marked any-platform. macOS runtime behavior has not yet been tested.
Rhino 9 WIP APIs may change, particularly toolbar integration.
Gotham Black is used when installed. A system font is substituted when it is unavailable. No font is bundled.
Command icons are matched from available Rhino toolbar information; commands without a matching icon may use a fallback.

0.3.11 CHANGES
- Revised Mac icon drawing to use the same screen coordinates as the overlay background.
- Larger Mac labels and installed heavy/bold font fallback, using the Mac font PostScript name.
- Windows bitmap rendering is retained.
- Mac rendering paths and fallback typography were checked in Rhino 9 on Windows. Actual macOS confirmation remains pending.

0.3.10 CHANGES
- Insert the button into a visible top toolbar instead of creating a separate toolbar row.
- Remove the separate Command Overlay container introduced by earlier preview builds.
- Preserve existing toolbar buttons and avoid duplicate insertion.

VALIDATION
Insertion, preservation of existing button order, hiding of the earlier separate row, and repeated installation checks passed in Windows Rhino 8 and 9.
A full restart persistence test and Mac runtime testing remain outstanding.
